Chapter 13 – Royal Arrivals
Elrond quietly made his way to Haldir and Rúmil’s room. Straightening his robes and trying to put on the best face possible he knocked softly on the door. Opening the door Haldir bowed his head, “Milord Elrond,” he said as he stepped to the side to admit the ancient lord. Adhering to his earlier edict, Elrond did something he had never had to do before; he requested permission to see his son.
“Haldir, may I see Estel? I know it is still very soon after all the arguing, but…I need to reassure myself that he is all right, and I have news for all of you.”
“Come in Milord.”
Elrond politely nodded his thanks and as the boy caught sight of his father he squealed in delight. “Adaaa!” Standing on the bed the boy bounced with joy, and was quickly reminded by his bandaged leg that maybe that was not such a good idea.
“Ouch,” the child exclaimed as he bent over grabbing his leg. Rúmil steadied the little one and Elrond moved quickly to his side. “Do the wounds trouble you ion nín? The elf lord sat on the side of the bed and Estel wrapped his arms around his father’s neck hugging him close.
“It stings a liddle bit Ada.” Estel sat down and lay back on the bed while the great elf lord placed a hand over the wound sending healing energy to the leg. As Elrond tended to his leg Estel, as children his age are wont to do, rested his other bare foot on his father’s chest, attempting to tickle him under the chin. The result was just what Estel hoped for, his father with a mouth full of his toes. It was one of his favorite things, to have the otherwise staid and formal elf nibble on his tootsies. Estel flexed his leg an announced “Dat tickles Ada.”
Seeing his son’s bright smile brought great pleasure and peace of mind to the worried father. “Is that better?”
Knowing that he could avoid the medicinal tea by agreeing, Estel responded.“Yeth, iss much better Ada, so no icky tea right?”
Elrond eyed his little one suspiciously, but seeing the exuberant smile on the child’s face allayed any fears he might have held that Estel was in pain. “No icky tea…this time. But you will be honest and tell me if it starts to trouble you, right?”
“Right,” he nodded enthusiastically. Deftly changing the subject Estel moved on to the other reason for his father’s visit. “Whas da news Ada, you said you had news for us.”
“Well it seems we are about to have visitors. I have just been informed that Prince Legolas and possibly his father are on the trail headed for Imladris.”
“Oh ada, iss he sick…iss he coming here for healing…what happened to his legs ada?”
Confused, Elrond gave Estel a quizzical look, “What happened to who’s legs ion nín?”
“Da prince ada, Leg-less. Ada whas a prince?” The three elves laughed hardily while they tried to explain.
“No Estel his name is Le-go-las, and there is nothing wrong with his legs he is just fine. And a prince, well a prince is the son of a king.”
“Da prince iss coming here? An his ada is comin’ too?”
“It appears so little one. You know what that means do you not?”
“Whas dat mean ada?”
“It means you must be on your very best behavior…we all must,” he said as he looked at Haldir and Rúmil guiltily.
“Does dat mean Dan an Roh too?”
“It most certainly does, tithen pen – especially those two.”
“Did you have to put dem on da naughty stool ada?”
Elrond smiled, “In a manner of speaking – yes, they are in the stables doing their penance as we speak.”
“Whas pen-nance ada?”
“It means punishment Estel. Right now the two of them are mucking out the stables for all the horses in Imladris. Moreover, they will continue doing it each day that they are not on duty at our outposts.”
“Did dey ‘pologise Ada?”
“Not nearly enough” he tried to say under his breath, but he underestimated Estel’s Dúnedain hearing, which was much accentuated over that of the average adan, and the sarcastic snipe did not go unacknowledged.
“Den dey need to do more Ada, dey need to ‘pologise to Glorfy, an to Halli, caused dey yelled at Halli, an to Affaloff...”
“Asfaloth, you want them to apologize to Asfaloth too?”
“Umm hum, Affaloff iss very ‘tecktive for Glorfy, an Dan hit Glorfy so I know Affaloff iss mad.”
Ohh...very protective you say?”
“Umm hum, dey got a lot a ‘pologisin’ to do.”
“Well, I dare say you are right son, there is a lot of apologizing that needs to be done, and I will make sure that your brothers apologize to everyone you think they need to, but for now, let me be the first. I want to apologize to you Estel for all the yelling I did today. Your brothers made me very angry, but that is no excuse for the way I comported myself. I was yelling at the top of my lungs like a fish monger in the streets, and that is no way for an elf to carry himself, and it is certainly no way for a father to behave. I beg your forgiveness Estel for my bad behavior; I hope to never see another day like this one ever again.”
“I forgive you Ada, iss not you fault, dey made you yell, you never yell...unless you sayin’ SURPRISE for a party or somethin’ like you did for my birth day. I love you Ada, you not bad, dey da bad ones, dey need a spankin.”
“Well I certainly appreciate your forgiveness Estel and your support and as much as I would like to put them both over my knee I am afraid they are both a little too old for that – so we will have to be content with the extra stable work I have piled upon them. But their punishment is neither here nor there at the moment we have more important things to attend to. We must prepare for the possible visit of a King!

Glorfindel exited the kitchens and made his way outside the front door of the house searching for one of the sentries. Within moments he found Hírómë the lieutenant in charge of security for the house.
“Ahh Hírómë, just the elf I am looking for.”
“Good day to you Lord Glorfindel, how can I be of assistance?”
“Hírómë I need you to locate Geleph, Brithil, and Lethros…and if my memory is correct Ianthir should be off duty from the east gate. Have them assemble in the courtyard as quickly as possible, we will be riding out to escort Prince Legolas and his party into Imladris, find them quickly - I have to go an collect two others and I will be right back downstairs.”
The sentry immediately headed out the front door at a dead run calling out over his shoulder as he went, “As you will my lord, I will have them ready by the time you return”
Glorfindel took the front stairs two at a time and strode purposefully towards the main staircase that led to the third floor wing and the bedchambers of the twins. As he approached the stairs he looked down the corridor and saw Elrond exiting Haldir’s room and saying his good-byes to Rúmil. He stood there momentarily and Estel turned just in time to see him and broke away from his father’s hand and walked limpingly straight for the Balrog slayer.
“Glorfyyyy!”
Glorfindel stood stock-still. He looked from Estel to the face of Elrond and was flummoxed as to what to do next. Ordinarily he would have scooped the boy up into his arms, but with Elrond standing right there and his lord’s edict hanging over his head, he was reticent to move, let alone touch Estel. The child apprehensively moved toward Glorfindel, still a little unsure of himself. Glorfindel was after all the one who had hurt him, and after an afternoon’s contemplation Estel wondered now if it had indeed been an accident, or if the slayer had been aiming for him as well as Erestor. With these thoughts in his mind he stopped a few feet short of Glorfindel and gave him a halfhearted wave.
“Hi Glorfy”.
Glorfindel looked to Elrond beseechingly, the look on his face clearly asking, “What am I to do?”
Understanding his dilemma the great Elven lord relented. Giving Glorfindel a subtle nod he backtracked on his earlier decision and allowed the commander to speak to his son.
“Glorfy are you all right?”
The golden one knelt and drew the child into his arms. “I think I should be asking you that Estel, are you all right little love?”
“I fine Glorfy, I got a boo-boo on my leg, see,” he said as he pointed to his bandage, “I was scared, but it don’ hurt no more. It hurt for a liddle while but ada fixed it for me. “’Glorfy” he asked apprehensively, “why did you hit me with the bottle did I do somethin’ wrong?”
At that moment the true severity of his actions hit home and Glorfindel wished he could dig a hole right there in the hallway floor and then climb into it to disguise his shame and embarrassment. There was some part of Estel, however small, that was not sure that what happened was an accident, the child actually thought that there was a possibility that the slayer had hurt him on purpose.
“Estel…I am so sorry I frightened you little one. I never should have thrown that bottle…I do not know what I was thinking. I threw it and I missed and hurt you, but if I had not missed – I would have hurt Erestor and I do not know what I could have been thinking to believe that that would have been all right. I am so ashamed little one, my behavior was appalling, can you ever forgive me for hurting you?”
As the child loving wrapped himself around the slayer’s legs he responded, “Iss all right Glorfy, you did not mean to hurt me, you did not do it a purpose…it was a acci…acci…”
“Accident?” Elrond supplied.
“Yeth that, it was a acci-dent.”
“Estel, you are too kind, I think you must be the kindest little boy I know. Anyone else would have been furious with me, would have never spoken to me again, but not you. Your heart is true and holds only love for your friends. I am a lucky elf indeed to have you in my life. Thank you for your forgiveness little one, you have lifted a great weight from my shoulders.”
Estel looked at Glorfindel quizzically while he examined the slayer’s shoulders. “I don’ see nothin’ dere Glorfy, it must have flown away cause iss not dere now.”
The commander smiled and hugged the boy tighter saying, “No it is not, your smile chased it away. And a good thing too for I have an important task to complete just as soon as I find your brothers.”
“I know where dey are Glorfy, Ada sent them to muck out the ‘tables for not bein’ ‘specful.” He leaned in then and whispered in Glorfindel’s ear, “and for hitting you…Dan is in big trouble for dat and he has to ‘pologise” the child said nodding assuredly.
“Well then I had better go and find them for I have more work for them to do.” With that the slayer stood and taking Estel by the hand he returned him to his father. Bowing slightly in Elrond’s direction he acknowledged the elf lord’s generosity in allowing him to speak to the child then turned and double-timed it out the door and down the stairs heading for the stables and what he hoped would be a civil interaction with the twins. “Civil or not,” he thought as he went, “I will not allow their attitudes to determine how and if I do my job. They will yield or they will both find themselves getting up off the ground.”

Geleph, Ianthir Brithil and Lethros stood just inside the stable door adjusting the tack on their mounts before heading to the courtyard to meet their commander of arms. The four elves were having a high time teasing the sons of Elrond over their newly assigned duties. In particular Brithil, Elladan’s bodyguard, was having a grand laugh at his charge’s expense.
“It serves you right meldir, personally I am surprised that he allowed you to live long enough to attempt a second swing at him.”
“Ai Elladan” Geleph quipped, “Were you anyone else you would still be picking your teeth up off the floor.”
“I know I could not have gotten away with it,” Lethros added.
“You would never have attempted it in the first place” Elrohir added defensively, the ever-present need to protect his brother coming to the forefront.
“You speak truly my friend, for I am not that foolish.”
“Nor does my brother have a death-wish,” Brithil added quickly. “Trust me, t’was only his respect for our lord that permits you to continue drawing breath this morning. What were you thinking Elladan, you knew you could not best him in a fight and yet you struck him anyway. Glorfindel helped to raise you, he trained you, striking him would be like striking one’s father, where was your head?”
As the elder son of Elrond shifted another pitchfork full of soiled hay into the compost heap he answered slowly. “I did not think of who he was or his station, only that my brother was hurt. And anyway,” he said defiantly, “he hardly ‘raised’ us as you say, we were over 1800 years old when he arrived – hardly children.”
“Nevertheless, he played a crucial part in your upbringing, both as a teacher and a mentor, and one does not just assault someone who has played such an important part in one’s life. Believe me Elladan I understand your concern. I cannot say that I would have behaved differently if it were my brother who was harmed. I understand your anger, but it was not your place to seek retribution, if that was indeed what was necessary, Lord Elrond and Lord Elrond alone should have handled it.”
“Therein lies the problem,” Elrohir said quietly. “Unbeknownst to us he already had.”
Geleph was just about to comment when Glorfindel appeared at the head of the path. “Well Dan, if you feel the need to apologize for your actions now is your chance, Glorfindel approaches.”
As Glorfindel entered the stable door he eyed Elladan and Elrohir cautiously. “Good, you are all here.”
“All? Elrohir queried sheepishly.
“Yes all. You and Elladan will be riding out with us to meet the Prince’s traveling party.”
“I thought we would be confined to our quarters,” Elladan added solemnly as he looked at the ground.
“Did your father issue those orders?”
“No, but…”
“And neither did I. Since we are the only two people in Imladris who can issue such an edict against you, your duties will continue as they always have, along with whatever punishment your father as levied upon you. Right now we are expecting members of the Greenwood royal household and as Lords of Imladris it is incumbent upon you to ride out and greet them. Get your horses tacked and follow us to the gate. Be quick about it, we have already wasted much time, if Thranduil enters our gates without the proper escort he will never let your father live it down and I will not have Elrond subjected to ridicule from any quarter.”
As Glorfindel continued into the stable to retrieve Asfaloth Elladan spoke up.
“Glorfindel…I would speak with you,” he said sheepishly.
“We will talk later, right now our personal business will have to wait, our duty must take priority over any thing we need to discuss. We will speak after dinner, hurry now, Thranduil awaits.”
"....You gon' take too long ain't you?"
